WVC’s Fall 2026 Music Program
J.S. Bach Magnificat BMV 243
This piece has twelve movements - six are for chorus:
1. Magnificat
4. Omnes generationes
7. Fecit potentiam
10. Suscepit Israel*
11. Sicut locus est
12. Gloria patri
The other six movements are for soloists.
*(Suscepit Israel is scored for S1, S2, A trio;
Ron is asking all the sopranos and altos to sing this movement.)
And there will be a tba selection of holiday favorites.

There are five sets of practice aids to assist you in learning and practicing Bach's Magnificat.
Two YouTube videos of performances of the Manificat with orchestra and chorus.
A collection of YouTube videos by ChordPerfect, for each choral movement there is a solo voice singing one of the five parts (S1, S2, A, T and B) with the other parts and orchestra in the background. Each video shows the score as the movement progresses. These are excellent aids for learning the pronunciation of the Latin text.
A collection of audio tracks that for each movement emphasizes one of the five parts played on a piano and with the other for parts in the background. There is no accompaniment on these tracks.
Similar to the previous set, but the emphasized solo is played as a synthesized voice. The other parts and accompanimnet are in the background.

Note: in the "Documnents" box, below, you can download, view and sing along with either of two versions of the vocal score that are in the public domain. It's NOT advisable to print out these scores. WVC singers who register for the Fall 2026 season will be handed a printed edition of the vocal score in September that will be a rendition of the "Peters Edition" of the vocal score.
WVC members who sang this piece with Ron with HOT Opera: the score used there (Bärenreiter edition) has the same notes and measure numbers but different page #s as the Peters Edition.
When starting to learn the pieces of the music program, focus on the pitches and rhythms. Sing along with these aids using a single syllable, such as "ba", "da" or "ma", for each note. This is particularly true as you approach the numerous melismas that Bach sprinkled through the score! Each note of a melisma should get its own sylable.
When you are you comfortable with the pitches and rhythms, start blending the text into the music lines. The goal is that you have learned the notes, rhythms and text sufficiently so that in rehearsal and the concerts you follow the conductor as he shapes the dynamics and tempi and we all "make wonderful music together!"
